Big Dig Day at the Down to Earth Herb Garden
November 24, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Down to Earth are a local community group who are working to turn a disused space near the University of Hull campus into a community herb garden. Although currently still a work in progress the area has great potential to benefit the community through its proximity to the university, a community centre, homes, schools, shops, offices, the university and other amenities.
They are working to create an innovative garden that merges the enjoyment and appreciation of wildflowers and native plants with opportunities for people to learn more about the science and practical benefits of herbal medicine. They are committed to engaging students and local residents in the development and care of the site, encouraging ‘learning through doing’ as they work together to create a safe and welcoming space for all ages, which will provide a lasting physical resource for the city.
Having worked hard to clear lots of weeds and rubbish from the site they are now at the stage of working on some design features for the site. come down to Big Dig Day on Thursday 24th November to see the garden, meet some of the team and lend a hand. Jobs on the day will include:
- Building and lining a large raised bed
- Creating pathways
- Digging over existing beds
- Planting out
You are welcome to come of all or part of the day. They can provide all tools, gloves and instruction but anyone coming along should bring their own sturdy boots. They will also provide light refreshments during the day.
The Garden can be accessed via the university car-park on Salmon Grove
In the event of bad weather the session will be cancelled and will be rearranged for 10am-4pm the following week – Thursday 1st December..
