The SOVA Hull Independent Visitors Project currently supports approx. 79 children and young people looked after by the local authority. Each young person is matched up with a volunteer Independent Visitor who provides them with a consistent, reliable adult role module in an otherwise often very chaotic and unstable life in the care system.
The majority of the young people have little or no contact with their birth family and the volunteer provides them with a consistent, reliable adult role model, someone to talk to about issues they are facing and an opportunity to participate in activities in and around the Hull area. Once ‘matched’ volunteers will support that individual young person for as long as the young person wants, often over a period of a number of years, building a supportive and meaningful relationship.
Volunteers generally visit their young person once a fortnight and have a very limited budget for activities of £10 for both the volunteer and the young person. As you can appreciate this can be very challenging and any additional funds, help or support are always greatly appreciated by the project and used to provide the best possible support to the children and young people we work with.
